When it comes to travel, safety always comes first. It is even more crucial when you travel alone. There are many instances when you can put yourself in danger during travel such as during a ride. Today, there are many ways you can get around during travel in unfamiliar place. Taking uber for example is the easiest way for you tor each your destination without dealing with crowded passengers. However, there is also the downside of a rideshare especially because you are alone.

Tips to stay safe while using rideshare service

Request your ride indoor. Do not wander or wait outdoor for the ride to arrive. You will be the perfect target for irresponsible people especially when they look at you looking lost with a phone in hand. It may attract thieves or pickpockets. 

Before getting in the car, confirm the driver and the car. There are many cases where people disguise themselves as a rideshare drivers. Therefore, always confirm your rideshare first before getting in. Look at their appearance or face to see if it matches what’s displayed in the app. Ask the driver the name of the passenger before getting in. Do not say your name first. If they say your name wrong ask them to repeat and do not just give them your name so easily. 

When you are travelling alone at night, remember to always share your trips with people you trust such as friend or family. Let someone you trust track your whereabouts in case something happen to you during the ride. When you let someone track you they will get notification to their phone, making them able to follow along via GPS from your phone. To do so, you can simply click the ‘Share trip status’ option when using Uber. If you are using Lyft, hit the ‘Share ride details’ option. 

Do not share your personal info to the driver regardless of how nice they look. You can exchange harmless pleasantries with your driver to melt awkward situation. However, avoid giving them any personal info. Do not let them know how long you have been travelling, where you stay, where you live, and personal contact information. Keep your personal information confidential. 

Stay safe by wearing your seatbelt and sit at the back seat when you are alone. It allows you more opportunity to find solution if something happen during the ride. Always be aware of your surroundings and monitor the driver to see if they follow the correct route. If they take you somewhere suspiciously ask them and if they are very suspicious, ask them to pull over. Use the emergency button on the app that let you call 911 if emergency happens. 

Give feedback once your ride is complete. Rate your driver and leave helpful feedback for other passengers to keep good drivers on the road and the bad ones off. It is also helpful for you to check the driver’s rate before requesting for a rideshare service.
